The Colour of Our Skin - Interactive Presentation

How does the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation make the issue of Racism personal and interactive for Winnipeggers?
They commission Tactica to create an interactive presentation to encapsulate hours of video, audio, and research data.

CBC’s The Colour of Our Skin series is a penetrating look at individual Winnipeggers' experiences with race and racism at work, in the justice system, at school, in their communities and homes. Tactica’s challenge was to consolidate the television, radio and statistical data into a graphically rich interactive experience consistent with the series and resonating with the audience.

Telling a Personal Story

CBC’s exposition of racism, told from an array of individual experiences, inspired Tactica to develop an interface focussed on individual human faces from representative races. Close-ups of these faces on each screen, making eye contact with the user, connect us to the presentation through personal identification. The juxtaposition of these faces from different races further accentuates the emerging theme – there are tangible differences between us but under the surface similarities bind us all together in our humanity.

Show and Tell

Tactica developed an easy to follow navigational framework complimenting the emotive design with a wealth of easily-accessible content:

  • An interactive diversity map allows users to select different areas of the city to explore an ethnographic breakdown of Winnipeg’s communities;
  • The public opinion survey is transformed into compelling colour coded graphs and bar charts allowing the user to quickly interpret significance without wading through pages of dry statistical data; and
  • Easy-to-use video and audio players provide unlimited control for the playback of clips for the radio and television series.
